Pet Travel Tips

Six Tips for Traveling with Your Pets
Let's face it; you're probably going to have to do more traveling before the holidays are over. Bringing your pets along is sometimes a necessity. If you're planning a trip with Fido, here's what you can do to help make the trip safe and enjoyable.  (Note:  It is definitely NOT recommended for you to put your dog in a regular seat belt.  We just thought this was an amusing image.)
1.Dogs and cats need to be secured properly, both for their safety and yours. The first and best option is to crate your animal for the duration of the trip. For large animals, a more feasible option is to use a special harness that attaches to your vehicle's seatbelt. Crates and harnesses are available at your local pet store.
2.The ASPCA cautions against allowing pets to ride with their heads out the window of a moving vehicle. Not only do they risk being hit with a flying object, but they are also at risk of inner ear damage and lung infections.
3.The noises and movement from car travel make many pets anxious. This anxiety can be expressed through barking, shaking, excessive drooling or even vomiting. Prepare your pets for a long trip well before you plan to leave. Start slowly by getting them used to being in the car. Once they are a little more comfortable, condition them with short trips around the block, gradually extending the duration of these trips. If your pet still suffers car anxiety, talk to your veterinarian about medications. Also consider keeping stain and odor remover in the trunk, just in case of an accident.
4.Don't feed your pet right before you plan to leave. Instead, give him or her a light meal a few hours in advance. Never feed your pet in a moving vehicle.
5.Just as you will on a long trip, your pet will need periodic pit stops and stretch breaks, too. Bring along a leash, water and small treats, as well as a favorite toy the pet can play with for some exercise.
6.If you're planning overnight hotel stays, be sure to check in advance whether the hotel has pet-friendly policies.

Keep Your Eyes on the Road!

http://www.nbcbayarea.com/news/local/bayDistracted-Driving-May-Cost-You-More-127946593.html

Statistics show that traffic accidents linked to cellphones are on the decline. But the California Highway Patrol isn't buying it. After all, if you survived an accident caused by a cellphone, would you admit it?
And what about texting? That's an act of communication that actually lends itself to deceit.
"Many people try to camouflage it, they try to hold it under the steering wheel," said Officer Charmaine Fajardo of the CHP. "That makes them take their eyes off the road even longer."
Faced with growing public ignorance of the law, and apathy about its purpose, California lawmakers took action. You may not have noticed, but a bill was approved this week that adds some serious financial consequences if you use a hand-held device while driving or bicycling.
The first offense fine would increase from $20 to $50, if Gov. Jerry Brown signs the legislation. A second offense would cost $100. But it's the fees that are likely to get the most attention.

400,000 Miles?!

400,000 miles??
Drivers Determined to Achieve Higher Mileage
Nearly Unanimous, National Survey Reveals Drivers View Oil Changes as Key to Vehicle Longevity

HOUSTON – Roy Lindahl has been driving his white Jeep® Cherokee since the day they drove off the lot together seventeen years ago. He and his vehicle, affectionately nicknamed "Jeepy," recently reached a major milestone when the odometer hit 400,000 miles. It was a proud moment for Lindahl, who has kept Jeepy on a regular preventive maintenance schedule for years to ensure his reliable companion takes him where he wants to go for years to come. It's been a habit well practiced for Lindahl, who has surprised even maintenance technicians with his Jeep's impressive condition and mileage.
An auto mechanic as a teen, and engineer by trade, Lindahl has seen the impact that neglect can have on a vehicle first hand and he has passed the importance of proper maintenance on to the next generation. His son, who has inherited his passion for vehicles, recently showcased his own restored vehicle in a hometown parade and practices the same dedication to maintenance. It's no surprise that Lindahl and his son are not the only drivers looking to hold onto their vehicles as long as possible. A recent survey conducted by Jiffy Lube International (JLI) reveals that more than half of U.S. drivers hope to have more than 150,000 miles on their vehicle before replacing it, and more than a quarter aspire to clock 250,000 miles or more.

Green Tips for Autumn Driving

Green Up Your Car for Autumn!
Most automobile owner’s manuals recommend a switch of engine oil weights between seasons. If you did this last summer, switch to your car’s recommended winter weight as soon as the weather cools.
There’s really no such thing as a “safe” antifreeze, but if you’re getting your radiator flushed before winter, ask for a propylene glycol (PG) formula. It’s less toxic to children, pets, and wildlife than ethylene glycol (EG) coolants.
Do you have a roof rack for carrying summer recreational equipment? Remove it until next year. Roof racks decrease your vehicle’s aerodynamic efficiency and hurts fuel mileage — particularly at highway speeds. While you’re at it, check you car for any unnecessary summer items, such as coolers or picnic gear. No need to burn fuel by carrying unnecessary weight.
Evaluate your tires. Worn tread and improper tire pressure aren’t just bad for fuel economy — they’re not safe, particularly if you live in an area where highway icing is likely. Inspect, rotate, and balance. Whip out your tire pressure gauge at least once a month and check all four corners.

Jiffy Lube FAQ's

What can I expect from my visit?
When you visit a Jiffy Lube, you can expect to receive high quality automotive services performed by Jiffy Lube certified technicians at an exceptional value. For more information, please see the Jiffy Lube Pledge.
What are Jiffy Lube® service recommendations based on?
The majority of Jiffy Lube service recommendations are based on your owner’s manual.
Don't I need to go to my dealer to maintain my warranty?
No. While automakers are using stronger language when speaking to vehicle maintenance, the term “Requirement” generally refers to regular maintenance as designated by the owner’s manual.
However, who does the service is not a determining factor. When Jiffy Lube performs automotive maintenance, we follow the exact stipulations set forth by the manufacturer’s recommendations.
It is important to note that manufacturers warranties do vary. Please consult your manufacturer to confirm.
How do I decide whether to use conventional, semi-synthetic or synthetic oil?
Please consult your owner’s manual. Be sure to match the specification listed in your owner’s manual to that listed on the container of the motor oil. The name or type of motor oil (conventional, synthetic, or synthetic blend) is incidental to meeting this specification.
Examples of Specification designation are:
Ford WSS M2C930-A and WSS-M2C929-A
GM 6094M and 4718M
Chrysler MS 6395Q
Mercedes Benz 229.51 and 229.31 non AMG
VW 505.00, 502.00 504.00, and 507.00

Green tips for Car Washing

We found this list from Ford detailing tips on how to wash the "Green" way.  Check it out!

As the summer season gets underway, millions of Americans will have “Wash the Car” on their weekend to-do lists.
Before you pull out the buckets, sponges, soaps and sprayers, Ford has a few tips for making your car clean and your car wash green.
  • Turf Job: When washing your car at home, take the chore off the driveway and on to your lawn. Not only will you get your car clean, but you will water the grass as well.
  • Save it When You Spray it: Americans waste gallons of water by leaving their hoses on during car washes. Before you make your vehicle squeaky clean, buy a water-saving hose nozzle to shut off the flow of water when you aren’t spraying your car.
  • Don’t Kick the Bucket: Give your car a quick rinse with the hose, then fill a bucket with water and suds. Use the bucket with soapy water to wash the car, allowing you to save gallons of water during the cleaning process. Use your hose to rinse the car clean.
  • Grab the Rag: Before you get out the paper towels to dry your car, consider using a clean rag or a microfiber towel. Either will get the job done better and can be used repeatedly throughout the summer.
  • Go Pro: While you can save money washing your own car at home, the most environmentally-friendly way to get your vehicle clean may be using a car wash. The International Carwash Association reports that automatic car washes use less than half the water of even the most careful home car washer. According to one report, washing a car at home typically uses between 80 and 140 gallons of water, while a commercial car wash averages less than 45 gallons per car.
However you clean your car, Ford Motor Company encourages you to do it in the most environmentally friendly way possible.

Tips for Teen Drivers!

Road Rules for New Drivers
Your child has waited a long time for his or her driver's license and that time has finally arrived. Driving will change the way your child looks at the world and it will change your life forever.
Safety is the most important consideration when it comes to new drivers, but there is more to it than merely knowing the laws. Here are some tips you can share with your child to help her become a true "roads scholar."
Stay Focused
We never stop becoming better drivers; we build up our experience every time we hit the road. It's especially important that your first few years as a driver are spent concentrating on the road, keeping distractions to an absolute minimum. Here are some practical ways to stay focused:

  • Keep the volume of your radio or CD player low enough so you can hear the sounds of the traffic around you.

  • If you’re driving with passengers, ask them to keep their conversation to a minimum so you can concentrate on driving safely

  • Cell phones are a great convenience, but they can be dangerous when you take your eye off the road to dial a number or answer a call. If your call can't wait until you've reached your destination, pull over to the side of the road so you don't become distracted.

  • Don't eat while you’re driving. Looking for a lost french fry between the seats is a recipe for disaster.
Passengers and the Speed Limit
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety reports teenagers accounted for 10 percent of the US population in 2005 and 12 percent of motor vehicle crash deaths.
Watching your speed becomes even more important when you have passengers in the vehicle. The Insurance Institute reports that most crashes involving young drivers result from driver error, speeding, and/or tailgating.
Remember, along with the privilege of driving comes the responsibility for you, your passengers, and others sharing the road.
